, response to the part about spending cuts, and what is spending cuts is the obama administration talking about, guaranteed spending cuts? >> they already accepted a trillion dollars in domestic spending cuts in next 10 years. they put on the table additional cuts in medicare and social security not as much as republicans want but clearly they have moved on that. and i also think there will be substantial defense cuts, if we want to make a dent in the deficit. i mean this is the choice that is going to be in front of us. if, we have to do four things if we want to reduce the deficit. we have to get more revenue, we have to cut domestic spending, we have to trim and reform the health care programs in particular of medicare and medicaid and we have to cut defense. if we do all four of those things we can make significant down payment getting deficit under control. if we do some of them, the numbers are not there enough to make as much progress as we want. this is where mark and i agree. over next six to nine months we could see substantial progress towards smart fiscal policy in the country

, the spending cuts that make up the fiscal cliff. president obama, he cut his christmas vacation short to deal with this crisis. he arrived back from hawaii just a short time ago, and the senate also returning to work today hoping to come up with some kind of agreement. but time is running out. jessica yellin, she has the latest from the white house. we've got dana bash following the developments on capitol hill. i want to start off with you, dana. what do we know about a possible compromise on the senate siepd what they might be proposed in fairly short order? >> compromise, i'm not so sure we'll see that. but i was told by a republican senator and democratic senator that the pr indicated before he left for hawaii that he, the president, is expected to send a piece of legislation up today with his scaled back tax plan. that's something that the president outlined in general terms on the friday before he left for hawaii and since then what we've been hearing from republicans, particularly mitch mcconnell's office is we can't talk about whether we can pass anything until we actually see the leg

-- these two people ran on different issues. i mean these two parties ran on different issues. president obama ran not on spending cuts, but on tax increases for the wealthy. it's something that's going to happen next monday anyway or tuesday regardless of whether the president does anything or there's a deal or not. because it's just going to expire. >> he's known that all along. >> but the republicans ran on spending cuts. so they're the ones that ran on this. why don't they put up their spending cuts? the president didn't run on that. and the irony is when he did mention spending cuts, $716 billion in medicare cuts during the campaign, mitt romney and paul ryan and all the republicans, who wanted to do the exact same thing he did, they jumped on his case for proposing cuts to medicare. so how can you negotiate with a party that isn't serious about its own caucus, and isn't capable of controlling them and doesn't have a serious plan for dealing with spending cuts on its own, because it's afraid to take the heat? nobody wants to cut spending. let's just admit that. but if we're going to do it

in. leaving his family behind to continue their vacation without him, president obama boarded air force one early this morning and headed for washington to deal with unfinished fiscal cliff business. with just five days until the combination of automatic tax increases and spending cuts that could send the economy back into recession, mr. obama wants congress to take the lead in getting the job done. the senate convenes later today and senate majority leader harry reid told members to be prepared to address fiscal cliff issues through the weekend. reid is working on his own plan to get lawmakers to come together before the end of the year deadline. that plan would likely include letting the bush tax cuts expire for households making more than $250,000 a year and short term spending cuts instead of the massive long-term cuts that would happen if there is no deal. after our wednesday conference call, house republican leaders issued a statement saying they were waiting for the democratic controlled senate. the house will take this action on whatever the senate ca

, republicans say the problem is about spending and democrats say it is all about lack of revenue, how -- how does -- is that bridged in this year? can it be bridged? >> yes, it can. both president obama and speaker boehner have already begun to do a principle compromise. speaker boehner said i'm ready to raise taxes on those over a million dollars. president obama said i'm ready to have a new type of chain to consumer price index which -- impacts entitlement reform. the bipartisan national debt commission, simpson-bowles commission, said for every dollar of spending reduction, including the entitlement reform we immediate to have $1 in tax revenue. that's the principle compromise we have to have. so they are not far off. what we have to have is very simple. $4 trillion in debt reduction by this one-third, two-third division. because that gives us a sustainable debt to gdp ratio so the economy can go booming again. so i believe those two men have the economies of our nation best at heart and have to come a little closer and a little $500 billion sounds like a lot. $2.5 trillion. we have to do
